The world of luxury just got a vibrant new digital home! Remember Crown & Caliber? It's back, and it's not just about watches anymore – it's a full-blown luxury lifestyle magazine ready to captivate your senses.
Originally launched in 2013 as a go-to spot for pre-owned watches, Crown & Caliber played a significant role in shaping the early market for pre-owned timepieces. Its success led to an acquisition by Hodinkee in 2021, aimed at boosting their retail operations. Fast forward to 2024, and it found a new home with the European Watch Company.
Joshua Ganjei, CEO of the Boston-based European Watch Company, shared his excitement: "Crown & Caliber’s dedicated following made the acquisition a clear decision. This relaunch transforms that community into a more expansive editorial platform for watches and the entire world of luxury lifestyle. We're committed to providing daily content that educates, inspires, and entertains."
Leading this exciting transformation is Alexandra Cheney, stepping in as Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Director. Her mission? To guide a global team of writers and steer Crown & Caliber into a publication that sits at the exciting crossroads of horology, luxury, culture, travel, and technology.
"We're thrilled to be launching with an already established and engaged audience across social media and our newsletter," Cheney mentioned. She elaborated on their strategy to foster growth by offering a blend of in-depth content, easy-to-digest articles, and compelling real-world stories centered on luxury experiences.
Cheney explained the editorial approach: "Crown & Caliber is designed to offer both quick, accessible reads that encourage daily interaction and longer, deeply researched features that build authority through exclusive access over time. Our aim is to keep readers engaged on the go with shorter pieces and to provide them with immersive long-form content for when they have more time to delve in."
This editorial strategy is complemented by a robust social media presence, working hand-in-hand with their written content. "Future growth will also be fueled by strategic partnerships and exclusive, intimate events that resonate with our audience's lifestyle," Cheney added. "We want to create experiences that allow our readers to truly step into the worlds they read about – imagine a private dinner, a thrilling test drive, or an insightful conversation focused on a dream destination."
She further elaborated on their readership: "Our team, myself included, writes with the assumption of an informed and enthusiastic reader." The new publication is intentionally lean, "prioritizing seasoned contributors, rigorous editorial standards, and disciplined execution. Our success will be measured by repeat readership, the depth of engagement, and how efficiently we can grow, rather than just sheer numbers."
But here's where it gets interesting... Cheney believes Crown & Caliber will carve out a unique niche, bridging the gap between the credibility valued by timepiece and luxury enthusiasts and a broader cultural understanding. "This is an area that's currently underserved," she noted. "Many competitors tend to focus either on highly technical, insider watch news or on general luxury lifestyle content that's purely aspirational. Crown & Caliber aims to be the place where exquisite objects, refined taste, and intellectual curiosity all converge."
What do you think? Is this a smart move to blend technical watch expertise with broader luxury lifestyle content, or will it dilute the focus? Share your thoughts below!
